RESOURCES - ON BECOMING TEENWISE PROGRAM
Building a Relationship that Lasts a Lifetime
(A program for Parents of Teens and Pre-teens)
On Becoming Teenwise looks at the many factors that make living with a teenager a delight, or a constant struggle and disappointment. It brings hope to families challenged by the pressure of living with a teen. Practical steps are offered to rebuild and maintain family harmony and a loving relationship that can last a lifetime.
This parenting program is based on one book of the series of world best-selling paperbacks, “On Becoming Teenwise”, co-authored by Gary Ezzo and Dr. Robert Bucknam.

On Becoming Teenwise is a 12 session parent-teen education program designed primarily for parents of teens and pre-teens.
This is not a video-based program as all sessions of On Becoming Teenwise have been designed to be presented in person. It can be adapted according to the needs of your participants.
To be able to present the material well, the facilitators do need to have a thorough knowledge of Along the Virtuous Way program (formerly Growing Kids God’s Way) and be familiar with the way Growing Families International parenting programs are presented. We do recommend that a husband and wife present the material where possible.
Learn how you and your church might use this series to reach your neighbours, schools, and communities through the medium of parenting. This very practical vehicle will help you take the biblical worldview into the public sector-including public schools, boys and girls clubs, community centres, or any setting where young parents live, work, and play. The series is taught in a language that the average parent can understand and presented in a format that will keep them coming back week after week.
If you have any questions concerning the On Becoming Teenwise Program, please contact Joan Grosser direct on 0419 044 155.

“I have used this material to develop a very positive relationship with my own son and daughter, and have shared it many times with parents who were dealing with difficult situations with their own teen. Highly recommended.” John A. Kruithoff, Chief of Police, Holland, Michigan USA.

ON BECOMING TEENWISE - Developing Healthy Parent-Teen Relationships
Program text based on the book by Gary Ezzo, M.A. and Robert Bucknam, M.D.
Program Outline
Course Delivery:
The On Becoming Teenwise course consists of 12 sessions. Participants meet once a week to listen to a speaker and discuss the topic presented, in a small group setting. Parents are encouraged, but not obliged, to invite their teenagers to attend with them. Each participant receives a course textbook and handout folder. Supper together enhances the fellowship, support and encouragement received.
Introductory Session: Where are we? The Healthy Family Profile.
What are the characteristics of healthy parent-teen relationships? There is a self appraisal form to determine where you are in this journey. A positive message is presented, and a look at our own approach to teen parenting.
N.B. Parents are invited to attend the Introductory Session to observe, get an understanding of the course, and ask questions before signing up for the full 11 remaining sessions of the course.
Session 1: Thirteen! The Teen Years Have Arrived!
Is it inevitable that our teens will rebel? How can we avoid this western phenomena. What can a parent do when a teen openly defies his/her parents? What are some helpful steps for correction of wilful defiance?
Session 2: Starting Over with Credibility.
Developing our mindset. Learning how to lead by relationship and influence, more than authority. Are you a credible leader worth following? Twelve positive steps to establish a teen-parenting foundation.
Session 3: The Power of Relationship.
Building family identity, learning how to invest in the family, developing an interdependent family, respecting your teens personal, public and private world. How to give your teens the freedom to speak into your life appropriately.
Session 4: The Many Ways of Love.
Do you know how to say, “I love you,” to your teen in a language they can understand, appreciate and reciprocate?
Session 5: Communication.
Why teens don’t talk or listen! Foundations for communicating with your teen. This is a fun session with interactive role play – teens really enjoy this session!
Session 6: Conflict Resolution.
When we are communicating clearly and have the right attitude, conflict resolution becomes easier. How do we give our teens instructions that are clearly understood and received? Are we raising a moral teen – what does that mean?
Session 7: Principles of Moral Training.
Although the window of opportunity to transfer strong family moral values and ethics is now very small, if tackled sensitively, there is still hope. We believe moral education is an absolute priority in nurturing our children and is essential for development of strong family relationships, optimal intellectual and emotional development as well as the advancement of natural skills.
Session 8: Encouragement, Discipline and Correction.
Learning how to encourage our teen to develop healthy behaviour and relationships, teach personal responsibility, and ownership of their own mistakes. It also teaches the difference between “teenishness” and “foolishness,” and how to correct appropriately and effectively. This session provides parents with principles of correction that will help them not only suppress wrong, but elevate what is right.
Session 9: Dating, Courtship and Readiness for Marriage.
This session contrasts the difference between dating and courtship. It presents the three natural phases of courtship, and also provides some helpful guidelines for courtship relationships. There is some good advice on marriage, and instruction for parents on how to help their teen be morally responsible.
Session 10: Questions and Answers.
Your questions answered in a loving, concerned environment.
Session 11: “Letting Go” and Graduation Dinner.
