The Miracle of Life

The following is the preface for parents in 'The Miracle of Life', from Ami Loper...

Dear Parents,

Thank you for purchasing this book for your family. As the mother of three children, I am increasingly concerned not only with what my children learn regarding purity, but also for their playmates, acquaintances and especially their future spouses. It is my hope that the information presented within these pages will assist you in the role of protecting your child's moral innocence and teaching them the "facts of life."

The "Miracle of Life" is not intended as a stand alone 'how to' book, but as a companion to help you walk out the principles found in the series, "Along the Innocent Way: Reflections of Moral Innocence" by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo. The material and methods represented in "The Miracle of Life" are taken and used with permission from the curriculum. If you are not familiar with this series, I strongly encourage you to contact Growing Families International at www.gfi.org for ordering
* information on the "Along the Innocent Way" series. ( * Australia / New Zealand contact is through Growing Families Australia. )

It is important to read thoroughly all the information in this Parent's Guide before sharing information with your child. It is my desire that you become so well versed on the topic of reproduction, as presented in "The Miracle of Life," that you are completely comfortable and confident in it. It is my sincere belief that the more comfortable and confident you are in presenting this information to your children, the more comfortable and confident your children will be with your answers.

The following are some principles from the "Along the Innocent Way" series:

First, as parents, our attitude should be one of awe and our focus should be on God's miracle. This will communicate to your child the need for respect for this subject in general and an awareness of God in all aspects of our lives. It is God who created all of creation for our pleasure. The animals, plants and flowers - all things in nature - are intended to keep our focus on God. He alone is the Author of reproduction and sexuality.

Second, when our child comes with a question, as a parent, remember to understand their question and teach to that level. It was pointed out to my husband and me during an "Along the Innocent Way" class, that even if your child asks, "What is sex?" we need to ascertain the context. He may have simply heard someone ask a pregnant mother if she knew the "sex" of her child! The point is a good one. Let us not jump too quickly to conclusions and teach something unnecessary for the time.

Third, please keep in mind, there are different informational needs for different moral ages. Wisdom dictates that information of this nature not be based simply on the chronological age of a child, but also on their emotional and moral maturity. There are times when a child should simply be told he is not ready for the information requested.

Fourth, the depth and detail of information should be revealed in stages as your child comes to new stages of readiness (i.e. the information stage, the curious stage and the comparative stage as defined in the "Along the Innocent Way" series). You alone can determine the appropriate occasions for sharing "The Miracle of Life" with your child. As a parent, you have the freedom and responsibility to insert or delete anything as you feel it is appropriate for your individual child.

It is not expected that this book will be the totality of your communication to your child regarding sexuality. As stated in the "Along the Innocent Way" series, there will be times when additional information is relayed. However, the flower is a morally neutral object that can be the foundation for nearly all discussions on reproduction.

Although it is optimum to communicate reproductive facts father to son and mother to daughter, this may not be an option for everyone. If you are in that situation, please know you are being upheld in prayer and we can trust the Lord to fill in the gaps. If you are not a single parent, please take a minute to say a prayer right now for those who are.

One other word of caution, please do not treat this book lightly with your child. This is a book to be read with your child; it is your book, not theirs. You are the teacher of this material to your child with the book serving as a tool to that end. The gravity you give to this matter will go a long way toward forming the mindset for purity in your children.

Most importantly, please approach this subject and any discussion of reproduction prayerfully. Before you read the book with your child, pray that the Lord will provide the wisdom and the appropriate words you need to rightly impart this information to your child. Each time your child comes to you with a question, take a moment to whisper a prayer to the One Who has the ability and desire to give you wisdom. (James 1:5)

Enjoy God's Creation!

To His Glory,

Ami M. Loper
