A SPECIAL FOCUS facets EDITION...
A Quiet Time
Getting started with 'Couch Time' as an On Becoming Childwise solo mum.
Heather McEwan writes in the introduction...
"So you’ve begun the “On Becoming Childwise course! Wow! Is you’re head reeling yet? I remember mine was when we did our first course from Growing Families! So much new to take in!!! So exciting to see there was such wise and practical help to be had?
I have put this little book together for those of you who may be parenting alone for this part of your. Perhaps your facilitator has encouraged you to use this time in a reflective way, to consider your goals as a parent, or to think through issues of life and meaning. Have you felt like you don’t know where or how to start this quiet time concept? This book is designed as a starting point. It’s not intended to give you more homework, but to be something that you will look forward to making part of your day. It’s intended you read just one page a day. Resist the temptation to speed through it, and once you have finished in several weeks time, please talk to your facilitator - I know they’ll be delighted to help you find something else to go on with in its place!....• Choose a place you can sit quietly - not near the telly!
• Before you start, talk to your kids and let them know where you will be, how long you will be and that you do not want to be interrupted (except for emergencies). See that they have something to be occupied with and are not just left floating.
• Expect possible interruptions for the first few times as they get used to the idea.
• Have your notebook and a pen handy - to record things that might occur to you while you sit and read - ”get the meat out for tea”, “ring Mum”, “buy milk in the morning” - the kinds of things that will distract you once you’ve thought of them and stop you enjoying your quiet time for fear of forgetting them! Also, you might have deeper thoughts you will want to record; or things you want to talk to your facilitator about - relationship issues, insights, “ah ha!!!” moments of revelation or understanding.
• And do you pray? This is a good time for that to happen too!
So then, grab a cuppa and get comfy..."

While On Becoming Childwise is designed for parents of primary school aged students, there are two other complimentary programs for parents of students, and for school staff:
School Staff Development....
Biblical Parenting Principles For The Classroom
Professional Development Kit for school teachers and staff.
School Staff Development Curriculum for establishing congruency between home and school in the training of children. This newly created Australian program is aimed at school staff development, to compliment what the parents of their students are learning and implementing from the Growing Families core parenting programs.
Secondary School....
Secular Parenting Program. (Through the Teen Years)
Looks at the many factors that make living with a teenager a delight, or a constant struggle and disappointment. It brings hope to families challenged by the pressure of living with a teen. Practical steps are offered to rebuild and maintain family harmony and a loving relationship that can last a lifetime. The course is a 12 session parent-teen education program designed primarily for parents of teens and pre-teens. This is not a video-based program as all sessions of On Becoming Teenwise have been designed to be presented in person. It can be adapted according to the needs of your participants.
On Becoming Childwise, The Series - Program Details
This core curriculum lays the groundwork for your parenting, no matter where you are in the process. On Becoming Childwise, The Series is designed to take parents through the process of building a loving family unit by raising morally responsible children.
Program Delivery:
The On Becoming Childwise, The Series course has 10 sessions to take you and your child through to the pre-teens. The participants meet one night a week to watch a video, and discuss the topics. Each couple receives their course manuals and homework to complete.
There is an introductory session that goes for 6 minutes at the beginning of the first video.
Session 1: How to Raise a Responsible Child.
The purpose of this lesson is to teach you how to get your children to take responsibility for their own actions. When your children have all grown up, what would you like to have raised, an obedient child, or a responsible child? The Ezzos have a “fun” way to teach the principles in this lesson.
Session 2: Keeping First Things First - Raising a Secure Child.
The importance of the relationship between Dad and Mum is emphasised as children need a secure atmosphere to grow up in. If you are a single parent, Gary & Anne Marie deal sensitively with the special issues that confront you.
Session 3: Touchpoints of Love.
‘The Five Love Languages’ are the key to this session. Do you know how to say, "I Love You" to your partner and your children in their love language?
Session 4: The Trustworthy Father - Raising a Trusting Child.
Fathers are shown what their role is in the family. The quality and quantity of trust your children have in you, is the only legitimate benchmark measuring your relationship with them.
Session 5: How to Raise a Moral Child.
How do we pass on to our children moral values? Where will they get those values from? Moral training, rightly applied, delivers the whole package: emotionally balanced, intellectually assertive, morally sensible children, raised to the positive response from a grateful society.
Session 6: How to Raise A Virtuous Child - Character Training - Part One.
You will be shown how to teach your children respect for Property, Peers & Siblings, Parents, Authority, Age, Nature, Self. Dad and Mum, you cannot lead your children any further than you have come yourself. You will learn what character really is.
Session 7: How to Raise A Virtuous Child - Character Training - Part Two.
This session carries on from the last session. Can you imagine a classroom filled with children who are courteous, polite, kind, gentle, full of self-control, not rude, badly mannered or impolite? Learn how you can work towards this. You will also be shown how children can “interrupt” politely.
Session 8: The Five Laws of Correction.
This session combines two presentations. The “Discipline Flow Chart” that is explained in the teaching session and the “Five Laws of Correction” found in the workbook chapter. The flow chart will help parents grasp the principles being taught. Learn the difference between “goal incentives” and bribes. You will also learn the difference between “childishness” and “foolishness”, and that encouragement and skills training are a very important part of correction.
Session 9: Red Cup/Blue Cup.
In this session a funnel illustration will be used to show what it is like to parent outside the funnel. We can allow our children too many choices that are not age appropriate. The result is that a child becomes “wise in their own eyes” or “too big for their boots”.
Session 10: Odds & Ends.
When you give your child a command, do they respond with "Yes Mum" or "Yes Dad”? First time obedience is achievable. What is it like in your family? You will also learn about the “5 minute warning” and the “appeal process”.
